U line

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In production management, a U-line is a specific arrangement of the stations within a group in flow production . If you look at such a line in the layout, the arrangement follows the basic shape of a "U". This has two main advantages:

  1. Simplified and improved communication between employees on the line, who are spatially closer than, for example, an arrangement in a row and can thus identify and eliminate problems earlier.
  2. A multi-machine operation is facilitated.

As far as it is an assembly line for heavier products, where the employees have to walk or ride along to cope with larger tasks, the U-shape has the further advantage that the return journey to the first work station is significantly shortened. In an increase in the concept, the leg ends can be brought even closer together. Then one speaks of an Ω-line .
