U-Multirank is an international, independent and web-based initiative initiated by the European Commission for the evaluation of technical colleges and universities. The aim of the project is to create transparency about the high diversity of universities in the tertiary education sector. This is intended to enable students, parents and universities to make a differentiated comparison between the educational institutions and their profiles. With the evaluation of more than 1,700 universities from over 90 countries, U-Multirank is one of the most extensive and detailed evaluation programs for universities worldwide.

functionality

U-Multirank is not a classic university ranking with a one-dimensional sequence, but a classification of the participating universities in performance profiles based on the model of the CHE university ranking. These profiles are published on the U-Multirank website. The performance of the universities is compared on the basis of five dimensions of university activity. These are (1) teaching and learning, (2) research, (3) knowledge transfer , (4) international orientation and (5) regional commitment. The evaluation is based on empirical data.

The main differentiator of U-Multirank from other university rankings is how it works. With a large number of indicators and filters that can be selected by the users, the web tool can be used to develop your own personalized ranking. The rankings created must always be considered taking into account the selected criteria.

history

Based on the results of a feasibility study carried out at 150 universities in 2010/11, the European Commission decided to finance the implementation of U-Multirank through the Erasmus program . In 2014, U-Multirank published its first evaluation, which included more than 850 higher education institutions from more than 70 countries. It enabled a ranking of the universities as holistic institutions as well as at the level of the specific fields of study. For the latter, the areas of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, business administration and physics were initially covered. Thereafter, the coverage of the institutions and subject areas was expanded every year. More than 1700 universities from 96 countries are now taking part (as of 2019). Over 100,000 students were interviewed.

organization

The initiative is managed by a consortium headed by Frans van Vught from the University of Twente in the Netherlands and Frank Ziegele from the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) in Germany. U-Multirank is funded by the European Commission , the Bertelsmann Foundation and Banco Santander . The consortium also works closely with a number of national ranking partners and stakeholder organizations.
