She expressed concern about the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands. She called on Argentina and the United Kingdom to cease hostilities immediately and demanded that Argentina withdraw all troops.

The governments of Argentina and Great Britain were asked to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

The resolution was presented by the British representative Anthony Parsons and was passed 10 to 1 with 4 abstentions.

Resolution 502 was very accommodating to the British government because it allowed the United Kingdom to invoke Article 51 of the UN Charter (right to self-defense). The resolution was supported by Great Britain and members of the European Community, who later also imposed an embargo on Argentina.
