UNIVAC 1101
The UNIVAC 1101 , also called ERA 1101 and ATLAS I , was a UNIVAC computer system designed by Engineering Research Associates (ERA) and built by Remington Rand in 1950.
Originally built for the NSA under the code name Atlas , the machine was referred to as UNIVAC 1101 in commercial sales . The code name Atlas is based on a comic book that was popular at the time.
The UNIVAC 1101 had the following properties:
- Length: 11.5 m
- Width: 6 m
- Tubes: 2695
- Drum memory : 48 kB (access time: 32 µs to 17 ms)
- Core memory : 12 kB (access time: 10 µs)
Two Atlas systems were built and delivered in 1950 and 1953. A third machine was built for their own purposes; they wanted to calculate the computing resources for the customer based on the processor time used. This business model was not yet mature enough, however, and the third machine was donated to the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1954 , where it was in use until 1961.
