UNIVAC BOGART

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UNIVAC BOGART , also called X308 and named after the journalist John. B. Bogart is a mainframe computer and was built 1955-1960 by Sperry Rand for the NSA . The BOGART system was a direct successor to the UNIVAC 1103 (ATLAS-II) and was used for cryptanalysis in order to recognize patterns in cryptographic texts.

The BOGART system was built by Seymour Cray and used the magnetic switch technology of the MAGTEC prototype from UNIVAC ATHENA . The BOGART prototype was completed in 1956 and then tested by the NSA. A total of five machines had been delivered by 1959 and used for a first test of the Remote Job Entry (RJE) concept for the NSA. After Seymour Cray left Sperry Rand in 1957, he used the same logical design in his first computer in 1960, the CDC 1604 for Control Data Corporation .
