UPower (formerly DeviceKit-power ) is a middleware (abstraction layer) for power management for Linux systems. It lists power supply devices, provides statistics and historical data about them and notifies you of status changes. It consists of a utility program (upowerd), a programming interface and a set of command line tools . The utility program makes its functions available to applications via the system bus (a D-Bus instance) (service org.freedesktop.UPower). PolicyKit restricts access to the UPower functions for initiating hibernation and for shutting down the operating system (service freedesktop.upower.policy). upowerInformation about the power supply devices in the system can be queried and monitored using the command line client program supplied . Graphical user interfaces for functions of UPower are for example the GNOME Power Manager and the Xfce Power Manager.

UPower is a product of the cross-desktop freedesktop.org project. It is published as Free Software including source code under the terms of Version 2 or later of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

It was designed as a replacement for corresponding functions of the outdated HAL . In 2008 David Zeuthen started a comprehensive revision of the HAL. As part of this, a number of separate services were initially created under the new name DeviceKit . In 2010 the DeviceKit-power contained therein was renamed. UPower was first introduced in GNOME and established as the standard. The Xfce desktop environment (version 4.8) followed in January 2011 .
