USS Atlanta

USS Atlanta is a traditional ship name used by the US Navy. It goes back to the city of Atlanta in the US state of Georgia. So far the name has been given five times.

  • USS Atlanta (1861) , originally a Confederate screw steamer that entered the US Navy in 1863, sold to Haiti in 1869
  • USS Atlanta (1884) , an armored cruiser, one of the first steel ships in the new Navy, built in 1884, commissioned in 1886, decommissioned in 1912
  • USS Atlanta (CL-51) , an anti-aircraft cruiser, commissioned in 1941, sunk in the Battle of Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942
  • USS Atlanta (CL-104) , a Cleveland-class light cruiser.Commissioned: 1944, Decommissioned: 1970
  • USS Atlanta (SSN-712) , a nuclear powered submarine, commissioned: 1982, decommissioned: 1999
