The USS Kidd (DDG-993) is a Kidd-class destroyer . After decommissioning the US Navy, the ship was sold to the Republic of China (Taiwan) .
history
The Kidd was commissioned by Ingalls Shipbuilding for Iran in 1978 . However, before it was launched in 1979, the ship was taken over by the United States Navy and put into service there in 1981. In Iran the ship would have been called Kouroush , instead it was named after Admiral Isaac C. Kidd , who died in World War II .
After test runs of the new ship, the first relocation followed in December 1982. The destination was the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, in both seas several friendship visits were carried out in ports.
In the following years, further trips to the region followed, with port visits and maneuvers with navies of friendly countries. Among other things, the ship served as an escort for the USS Iowa (BB-61) during Operation Northern Wedding .
In 1987 the Kidd took part in Operation Earnest Will , during the sub-operation Nimble Archer , the destroyer was involved in the bombardment of Iranian oil platforms. From August 1988 a one-year overhaul followed in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard .
On January 9, 1991, the Kidd moved with the USS McInerney (FFG-8) in the Persian Gulf, where the ships took part in Operation Desert Storm . Among other things, the ship was used to search for sea mines, the crew found and defused 15 mines in total. The destroyer spent 1992 in the waters of Central America, where it was supposed to track down and intercept drug smugglers.
In 1994 the Kidd drove back to the Mediterranean as part of a carrier combat group led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) . After maneuvers, the ships were used during Operation Sharp Guard , Operation Deny Flight and Operation Provide Promise .
After further smuggler hunts and port visits in the Caribbean in 1996 and 1997, the Kidd was decommissioned in 1998 and assigned to the reserve fleet. In 2001 negotiations began on a sale to the Republic of China (Taiwan) , and at the end of 2006 the Kidd was put into service there as Tso Ying .
