The USS Midway Museum is a museum ship and is located in San Diego , California on Navy Pier. The museum consists of the USS Midway (CV-41) and contains a large selection of aircraft mainly built in southern California.

history

The USS Midway was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the US Navy (1945-1992). Over 200,000 soldiers served on the ship, which was involved in several important military operations, including humanitarian missions. It is the only aircraft carrier that was in service throughout the entire Cold War . It is currently off San Diego, the birthplace of the Air Marine Guard and the original location of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School .

The ship opened as a museum for the first time on June 7, 2004. In 2012, the annual number of visitors exceeded the one million mark, making the USS Midway the most visited, still floating naval museum ship in the world. The museum has over 13,000 members and organizes over 700 events a year, over 400 of which are ceremonial farewells to active Navy Seals , veteran honors and the like. The museum also organizes excursions for schoolchildren, which are visited by over 50,000 students per year, and night walks for over 5,000 children annually. The ship's visit includes an unguided audio tour, which was recorded by US sailors, and shows over 60 exhibition rooms, including engine rooms, bedrooms, the bridge and the flight deck. 29 different aircraft are also on display. Other attractions such as cockpit tours, videos, flight simulators and a tour for younger visitors are also available. Apart from the tourists, the ship has also become popular in the media world. In 2012, for example, the NCAA basketball game between Michigan State University and Syracuse University was broadcast nationwide . In addition, many TV stations have shot various series on the ship, for example American Idol , Travel Network, Discovery Channel, FOX News, The Bachelor , Extreme Makeover , History Channel and Military Channel.
