The USS San Diego (identifier CL-53) was an Atlanta-class cruiser in service with the United States Navy during the Pacific War from 1942 to 1946 .
It was armed with 16 127-mm DP guns, 16 40-mm anti -aircraft guns and eight 20-mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns . Thus, the Atlanta-class had the strongest anti-aircraft capacity of any cruiser of World War II.
history
The warship was built by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation . The ship was awarded 18 Battle Stars for war missions in which the ship was involved. Only the USS Enterprise (CV-6) was awarded more with 20 Battle Stars.
On November 4, 1946, she was transferred to the Pacific Reserve Fleet. On March 1, 1959, she was struck from the register of ships and sold for scrapping in December 1960.
