The OpenBit is a pro rata profit and Nuremberg registered association . It sees itself as an innovation network for the promotion of Open Business, Open Innovation & Open Technology, and supports both companies and organizations in order to use the specific advantages in their own business model. OpenBIT currently has around 150 members, made up of personal members (experts, foundation coaches), corporate members, organizations and venture capitalists.

history

OpenBIT was founded in 2006 under the name of the Open Source Business Foundation by Richard Seibt, Eduard Heilmayr, Markus Rex and Andreas Scheulen with the aim of bringing the subject of open source companies closer to them , which at that time was still difficult to penetrate . The first few years were shaped by topics such as 'Community Building', 'Open Source Marketing', 'Embedded Open Source', 'Eclipse', 'Open Source Business Models' or 'Open Source Licenses' .

With the Open Source Business Award (OSBA), which was launched in 2007 , a top-class business plan competition was launched, which was endowed with prize money of over 150,000 euros during its term. Young companies or founders whose business core is based on an open source concept were eligible to participate . The OSBA competition was supplemented by a financing forum where company founders can present their business concept to venture capitalists and receive feedback.

In 2009, with the help of the OSBF, the first open source professorship was established in Germany and filled with Dirk Riehle , who previously headed the Open Source Research Group within SAP in Silicon Valley . He is building a research group within computer science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , which is closely linked to entrepreneurial activities and in the AMOS incubator introduces students to the topic of entrepreneurship .

In 2010, the OSBF continued the enterprise open source directory that was previously set up by Optaros and for a long time was the central point of contact for the evaluation of open source software in the corporate context . The EOS directory lists around 500 projects that are awarded according to enterprise criteria such as maturity level, community activity or support from service providers. The EOS project is currently suspended.

In 2012, based on the strengths of open source, activities were expanded to include open innovation and open technology . The focus here is on upcoming trends such as big data , coworking , creative commons , crowdsourcing , crowdfunding , design thinking , FabLabs , gamification , open data , open education , open government , open hardware , quantified self or unconferences .

On November 18, 2013, the Open Source Business Foundation and the OSBA announced that both associations want to merge. However, the merger failed, as announced on October 15, 2014.

From 14. to 16. February 2014 the first OpenUp Camp took place, which is a sub-conference for OpenEverything. A continuation of the format, which is a mixture of unconference and conference, took place from 26.-28. March 2015.

On March 26, 2015, the general meeting decided to change the name of the Open Source Business Foundation e. V. for Open Business, Innovation, Technology - openBIT e. V.

organization

The association is run by a compact board of directors consisting of three full members and other co-opted board members. They coordinate the activities of the association, represent it externally and are responsible for the budget for their projects. There are also a number of people responsible for innovative focus topics. If required, they are available as contact persons for their areas.
