The United States Sailing Association (US Sailing) is the national sailing association of the United States of America . He represents the USA in the world umbrella organization for sailing ( World Sailing ) and is responsible for the selection of the US sailing team for the Olympic Games .

history

The current sailing association was founded on October 30, 1897 as the North American Yacht Racing Union by six clubs and associations from the United States and Canada . Founding organizations were:

  • Inter-Lake Yachting Association
  • New York Racing Association
  • Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association
  • Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound
  • Yacht Racing Association in Massachusetts
  • Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club

The aim was to promote sailing and to standardize the regatta rules. After attempts at unification with the British Yacht Racing Association were unsuccessful, the association became inactive. In 1927 a new attempt was started, this time in cooperation with the International Yacht Racing Union , today's world umbrella organization, and the association became active again.

An independent Canadian sailing association, the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA), was formed as early as 1931, but the North American association remained in existence. The development in sailing in the 1970s made an independent US association necessary. The implementation of the Amateur Sports Act of 1978 and the strengthening of the United States Olympic Committee secured the association the right to select the sailing team for the Olympic Games. Ultimately, the association was renamed the United States Sailing Association in the 1990s .

Training and certificates

The association trains sailing instructors and certifies sailing schools according to the association's own training system, which enables qualifications for motor and sailing boats. There are training programs for children, adolescents and adults.

In principle, no license is required in the USA to drive pleasure boats; advanced training courses such as the Boaters Education Card are required for more powerful boats . A state patent from the United States Coast Guard is available for commercial operation of pleasure craft . Therefore, apart from the Boaters Education Card , the United States Sailing Association or competing American Sailing Association , the certificates are not state-recognized certificates, but rather certify the qualification.
