The US Sugar Corporation is an American agricultural company based in Clewiston , Florida . The main activity is the cultivation of sugar cane , but juice oranges and grain maize are also grown. 800,000 tons of sugar are produced annually (10% of US production).
The company was founded in 1931 by Charles Stewart Mott, an entrepreneur who helped found General Motors .
The South Central Florida Express railway company is operated for the transport of sugar cane .
The US Sugar Corporation owns ecologically valuable land around Lake Okeechobee . However, a purchase of land for rewetting by the public sector that had been planned for several years did not materialize.
