Ubiratàn D'Ambrósio

Ubiratàn D'Ambrósio (born December 8, 1932 in São Paulo , † May 12, 2021 ) was a Brazilian mathematics historian and mathematics educator.

Life

D'Ambrósio received his PhD in mathematics from the University of São Paulo in 1963 . Until his retirement in 1993 he was a professor at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). From 1972 to 1980 he was director of the Institute for Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science and from 1982 to 1990 Pro-Rector (Vice President) of the university. From 1968 to 1970 he was at the State University of New York in Buffalo . 1970 to 1978 he also taught at the Pedagogical University in Bamako in Mali as part of a UNESCO program.

Since the late 1970s he has been one of the founders and proponents of ethnomathematics , the preoccupation with ethnographic aspects of mathematics. Here he also dealt specifically with the history of mathematics in the context of the colonization process.

D'Ambrósio was the founder of the Brazilian Society for the History of Mathematics and the International Group of Ethnomathematicians.

In 2001 he received the Kenneth O. May Prize and in 2005 the Felix Klein Medal .
