Ubic body

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ubisch bodies appear on some pollen grains . They are small (usually less than a micrometer), spherical structures made of sporopollenin that are formed by the tapetum and sit on the pollen surface. They occur especially in plants with a secretion tapetum. In addition to the pollen, they also occur on the edge of the secretion tapetum.

Ubisch bodies were sporadically observed as early as the 19th century. Gerta von Ubisch and Lotte Kosmath independently examined them in more detail in 1927. John R. Rowley named them after Ubisch in 1963. Until then they were called spheroids or orbicules .
