action

Tally is almost sixteen years old. Like any other ugly, she looks forward to the operation with great anticipation. Her best friend Peris has already had an operation and lives across the river in New Pretty Town. Motivated by the desire to see him, Tally sneaks across the river to New Pretty Town one evening. There she meets Shay, another Ugly. They become friends and Shay teaches Tally how to fly a hoverboard . Shay also mentions that she doesn't want to have an operation.

On the day of her operation, Tally is taken to the Special Circumstances Department, a department that is likened to “goblins” and “blamed when something strange happens”. Dr. Cable, a woman described as "cruel Pretty", is the head of the department. She gives Tally an ultimatum: either Tally will help her find Shay and Smoke, or Tally will never get pretty. Tally agrees and Dr. Cable gives her a hoverboard and a necklace with a heart-shaped pendant with a tracking device inserted into it. If the tracking device is activated, it shows Dr. Cable and the Special Circumstances Department where Smoke is located. With Shay's clues in the bag, Tally sets off to find her friend.

When Tally arrives in Smoke, she finds Shay, her boyfriend David, and a whole community of runaway Uglies. She hesitates to activate the pendant and slowly realizes that David is in love with her. David takes her to introduce her to his parents, Maddy and Az, who were the first to flee the city. They tell Tally that the operation is more than a cosmetic makeover. It also leads to people becoming calmer and "nicer-minded". Shocked by this, Tally decides to keep Smoke a secret and throws the trailer into a fire. However, the heat of the flames activates the tracking device so that it shows the position of Smoke.

The next morning, the specials from the Special Circumstances Department reach Smoke. Tally tries to escape, but fails with this attempt. She is brought back to Smoke, where the other Smokies are held captive. By scanning the eyes, all smokies that have fled are identified and the city they fled from. Tally becomes Dr. Cable, who explains how the Specials found Smoke. Dr. Cable thinks Tally activated the trailer on purpose. After being asked to speak to Dr. Cable to return the trailer, Tally flees on a lift board. After a long and stressful hunt, she manages to hide in a cave where she cannot be located. She finds David, who is also hiding there. Together they plan to save Shay.

They return to David's house to find that the Special Circumstances Department has taken Maddy and Az away. David brings Tally to a secret hiding place with survival equipment and loads it onto four lift boards, which are also hidden there. When they arrive at the special circumstances department building complex, they discover that Shay has already been transformed into a "Pretty". After seeing Dr. Cable, David knocks her unconscious and takes her tablet, which contains all the information necessary to reverse the neurological lesions that the Pretty operation caused. Then Tally and David free all Smokies that are held in the building. As they flee the building, Maddy tells David that his father, Az, is dead.

When everyone is safe, Maddy uses Dr. Cables Tablet to Develop a Cure. She offers it to Shay, who does without it because she doesn't want to become a "vegetarian". Since Tally feels responsible for Shay's betrayal, she decides to become a Pretty and test the cure. She convinces David to let her return to town by telling him how the Special Circumstances Department hired her to find Smoke and betray everyone who lived there. While David realizes what Tally has just admitted, Maddy instructs Tally to return to town with Shay before she changes her mind. When they get there, she opens a Middle Pretty as the last sentence of the novel: “I'm Tally Youngblood. Makes me pretty ”.

Locations

300 years in the future, the government will provide everything, including plastic surgery. Each person undergoes an operation on their 16th birthday that transforms them into the social standard known as "pretty". After the operation, new “Prettys” cross the river to lead a life without duties or responsibilities in the center of the city.

Former cities collapsed after bacteria attacked global petroleum. The old, oil-dependent society fell apart when cars and oil fields exploded and food could no longer be transported.

Uglyville

Uglyville is where the Uglies live from their twelfth birthday until they have surgery on their sixteenth birthday and go to school in the same uniform. All Uglies living there are prohibited from crossing the river to New Pretty Town.

New Pretty Town

New Pretty Town is where the new pretties live. In Tally's town, New Pretty Town is on an island in the center of town, around which the river flows.

Smoke

Smoke is a wilderness breakaway settlement and the rebel village that was established as a refuge for Uglies who do not want to undergo the operation. Shay escapes there to escape the operation. When Tally found Dr. Cable throws into the fire, it shows the location of Smoke. Smoke is then destroyed by the Specials of the Special Circumstances Department.
