Example of a watch winder

A watch winder is a mechanical device used to wind automatic watches and keep them ready for use, even when they are not being worn. The watch winder slowly rotates the automatic watch attached to it around the rotor axis. The movement of the watch allows the winding mechanism (rotor, automatic hammer, etc.) to work and the watch is wound.

This is useful for watches with complications , such as the perpetual calendar or moon phase display , which can be quite time-consuming to set. In addition, the accuracy of a watch can be precisely determined, valuable collector's items can be kept ready for presentation.

The mechanical wear and tear to which the watch is inevitably subject during operation speaks against a watch winder.

Watch winders are often collector's items and accordingly lavishly designed (with fine woods etc.). Some of them are equipped with different elevator programs. The number of revolutions per day and the direction of rotation depends on the type of automatic elevator. Automatic movements are usually wound on both sides with approx. 650 to 900 revolutions ( UPT ; also English : TPD , "Turns Per Day"). Manufacturers of watch winders usually provide lists in which the movements and their direction of rotation are listed.
