Godigisel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Godigisel (often also Godegisel ; † probably 406 ) was a king of the Vandals ( Vandals ) from the tribe of Hasdingen .

Under his rule, the Vandals began to move west around 400, presumably under pressure from the Huns , and eventually invade the Western Roman Empire . During this time parts of the Vandal Silingen joined the Hasdingen . Shortly before crossing the Rhine at the turn of the year 406/407 (see  Rhine crossing from 406 ), there was a fight between the Hasdingen and Frankish warriors, who probably opposed the vandals as Roman federates . In this battle, which was extremely costly for the Vandals, Godigisel was also killed, the Hasdingen were only saved by a troop of Alans under Respendial .

Godigisel's successor was his eldest surviving son, Gunderich , who led the Vandals across the Rhine to Gaul and 409 to Hispania. His successor, Geiserich , under whom the Vandal Empire in North Africa rose to become the most powerful sea power in the western Mediterranean, was an illegitimate son of Godigisel.

  1. ^ Renatus Profuturus Frigeridus , Historia , received as an excerpt from Gregory of Tours ( Historiae  II 9). Frigeridus speaks of allegedly 20,000 dead vandals, which is certainly an exaggeration, but indicates the extent of the vandal defeat.
