Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. John (Pembina)
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. John is a Ukrainian Orthodox church in Pembina in Pembina County in the US state of North Dakota . It was originally built as an Evangelical Lutheran parish church.
history
The Icelandic Lutheran Church was established in Pembina in 1885 by Lutherans who immigrated from Iceland . Due to the departure of Lutheran families, the congregation could not be maintained, so that on June 4, 1937, the church building was sold to a Ukrainian Orthodox congregation for the sum of 450 dollars. In 1957 the typical onion dome was added to the church tower . The church was flooded in 1948, 1950 and 1997. In 1987 the Orthodox community had shrunk to just five members, who then decided to donate the church to the Fort Pembina Historical Society . Thanks to the efforts of this society, a restoration of the church was completed in 2008.
