Ulrich “Ueli” Gurtner (* 1956 in Winterthur ) is the director of Fedecocagua in Guatemala , on the board of the Banrural bank and a former Swiss football player.

After completing his active career, a three-year internship in a bank and studying law, he came to Guatemala in 1982 for the trading company Gebrüder Volkart (from 1988 Volcafe ) . When he was then asked in 1986 via middlemen from Anacafe to pay bribes in the amount of 300,000 US dollars in order to get a previously revoked export license back, the latter refused to pay bribes and after a query in Switzerland he was told that he should have no idea of ​​local customs in the country. Since he continued to fail to comply with this demand, he was forced to resign from his office by an armed force under the leadership of the then Volcafé director Paul Moeller in 1994 and asked to leave the country immediately. He also received death threats.

Structure of Fedecocagua

Since Gurtner had a young son in Guatemala, he soon returned to the country and took a job as a consultant at the Fedecocagua cooperative. In 1998 he was elected managing director there. During its time, the cooperative's production, which sells as much as possible under various labels ( Fairtrade , Starbucks , Rainforest Alliance , ...), increased from 16,000 to half a million bags. In 2007, the "Ulrich Gurtner Kappeler Foundation", a newly established foundation from the area around Fedecocagua, was named in his honor. For the Fedecogagua cooperative, Gurtner sits on the board of directors of Bank Banrural, in which the cooperative holds a stake of 11% (2011).

He was also affected by the murder case of lawyer Rosenberg , who, as it later turned out, ordered his murderers himself. Rodrigo Rosenberg, an enemy of the cooperative movement, accused in a video after his suicide the private secretary of the social democratic president of having carried out the murder, the Banrural bank of corruption and evasion of state funds and denigrated the marketing director of Fedecocagua as a crook and murderer.
