Ulriksbanen

The Ulriksbanen takes you as a cable car to the summit of Ulriken (643 m above sea level), the highest of the seven fells around Bergen . In some German books there is also the translation of the Bergener Hochfjellseilbahn .

At the mountain station there is a summit restaurant that is also the starting point for several hiking trails . The valley station (44 m above sea level) is located southeast of the center, above the Haukeland hospital.

Accidents

The only accident in the history of the Ulriksbanen occurred in 1974. On July 9, one of the gondolas detached itself, killing four people. After the accident, the railway was closed and only reopened in 1979. The local mountain hiking organization took over operation in 1983, but had to keep the railway closed in 1988 and 1989 for financial reasons.

Security issues

On January 10, 2006 the aerial tramway was shut down because a suspension cable had jumped off. The railway reopened on March 4, 2006 and worked until August of the same year when the police had to close the railway after a security inspection. Ulriksbanen resumed operations on April 1, 2007; but in January 2008 it was closed again because there was a risk that the ropes would not ensure safe operation. On May 1st, 2009 the railway was reopened.
