Named after | Olav Ulvestad |
The Ulvestad variant of the chess opening two knights play in the follow-up ( 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 ) arises from the Prussian game ( 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 ) after the move 5.… b7 – b5 and is under the ECO code C57 classified.
It is related to the Fritz variant 5.… Nd4.
The American champion Olav Ulvestad introduced 5.… b5 1941 in an article in Chess Review . White only has one good answer. 6. dxc6 bxc4 7. De2 Qd5 or 7. Nc3 Bf5 is weak. Therefore White should the runners move. 6. Bxb5 Qxd5 7. Bxc6 Qxc6 leads to compensation for Black after 8. Qf3 e4 9. Qb3 Bc5 and 8. 0–0 Bb7.
The best move is 6. Bc4 – f1 , as this protects the pawn on g2 and White on 6.… Qxd5? 7. Nc3 can return.
It is customary to switch to the Fritz variant with 6.… Nc6 – d4, which shows another advantage of 6. Bf1: the bishop is not attacked by the knight, as would be the case after 6. Be2.
In addition, 6.… h7 – h6 with the continuations 7. Ng5 – f3 and 7. Ng5 – e6 established itself.
