The Um el Ma or Umm el Ma ( Arabic أم الماء, DMG Umm al-māʾ 'Mother of Water') is an elongated lake about 800 meters in length near Awbari in Fessan in the Libyan part of the Sahara . The oasis formed by the lake is fed by numerous underground water reservoirs. The salt content of the lake rises up to 34%.
The Um el Ma is surrounded by a 10 to 15 meter wide ring made of various plants. Only on the eastern bank is this border interrupted by a 50 meter long, sloping bank, which is itself surrounded by a plant border. In winter, pond claw ( Gallinula chloropus ) and desert sparrow ( Passer simplex ) have already been observed there.
