Uma Mohan was born in Chennai (India) and grew up in a traditional, musical family environment. She was introduced to classical music at an early age by her mother and guru PL Saraswathy Ram from South India. During this time she learned different compositions from her great-grandfather Mahathma Sri Neelakanta Sivan, an enlightened saint from Padmanabhapuram . Her father, an industrialist from Chennai, gave her the roots of her inspiration and strength. She completed her education in Rosary-Matriculation-Chennai and subsequently complemented her musical talent with a Master of Commerce at the University of Madras .

Mohan achieved a high level of popularity through her musical compositions of Sanskrit and Vedic writings. The Indian chant forms a mixture of old mantras and texts up to more modern pieces of music. The study of the Vedas inspired her to perceive music and divinity as one experience and one harmony.
