Umlaut characters

The umlaut - in the English-language Unicode ' Combining diaeresis ' ; which can be written over a sound symbol for a vowel - indicates the centralized pronunciation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) . It is used to a much wider extent than the umlaut dots known in German (usually only in the plural) .

The character has the IPA number 415 and the Unicode number U + 0308. It's in the Unicode Combining Diacritics block .
