Tax master
In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, a tax master was an urban civil servant occupation. The old name was Ungeldherr after the municipal excise taxes ( excise ) that they levied and called Ungeld .
Taxlords were usually high-ranking municipal officials who, due to their responsible work in balancing urban finances, often belonged to the council or senate of their city or earned tax masters were rewarded with a council post. Their work is roughly comparable to today's treasurer or city caretaker.
