Unidad Especial de Intervención ( UEI ) is a special unit of the Direccion de Inteligencia y Seguridad Nacional in Costa Rica and was founded in 1982. The unit now has 70 members and is heavily armed and well trained. It is used for VIP protection, hostage rescue and against heavily armed criminals. The UEI uses eleven-person attack teams that are divided into three-person sub-teams. The San José-based unit was trained by teams from Panama, Israel, America, Argentina and Spain.

The UEI is criticized for militarizing police tasks with it, although Costa Rica abolished the military in 1948 (see Costa Rican armed forces ). The UEI has also participated several times in the Fuerzas Commando competitions, a maneuver organized by SOCSOUTH , and even won once.
