Armed Forces of Costa Rica

There have been no armed forces in Costa Rica since 1949 . The Fuerza Pública de la República de Costa Rica (Police) can be used for defense purposes.

Abolition of the military

The Constitution prohibits since May 8, 1949 standing army in peacetime. The Fuerza Pública (police) can be used for defense; The Guardia Civil de Costa Rica , a paramilitary police force, existed from 1949 to 1996 . Today there are extensive US troops in the country ( drug war ). The country's permanent neutrality was declared in 1983.
