The Dominican Armed Forces ( Fuerzas Armadas de la República Dominicana ) are the armed forces of the Dominican Republic .

history

The territory of the Dominican Republic was part of the Spanish crown colony of Santo Domingo. In 1805 the colony area was conquered by Haiti . On February 27, 1844, Santo Domingo separated from Haiti and became independent from the Spanish crown. The country was named Dominican Republic . It was followed by renewed Spanish rule (1861 to 1865) and the Second Republic (1865 to 1916). From 1916 to 1924 the Dominican Republic was occupied by the United States , which was followed by the Third Republic (1924 to 1930). Army General Rafael Trujillo was dictator in power from 1930 to 1961. In early 1962, a transitional government took over the official business, the Joaquín Balaguer andRafael Filiberto Bonelly presided over. In 1963 Juan Bosch was elected president, but was deposed in the same year by a military junta . This in turn was relieved of political power in 1965 by other army units with US support in Operation Power Pack . The end of military rule and the establishment of the Fourth Republic followed.

organization

24,500 soldiers are currently in the Dominican armed forces, 15,000 of them in the Army ( Ejercito de República Dominicana ), 5,500 in the Air Force ( Fuerza Aerea de República Dominicana ) and 4,000 in the Navy ( Armada de República Dominicana ). There is a voluntary service obligation. Defense spending is around $ 180,000,000, which is about 0.7%. of gross national income .

equipment

The army has 52 armored vehicles of the types M41 Walker Bulldog , Panhard AML , AMX-13 and M706 V-150 as well as 22 artillery systems and 15 helicopters in service. The Air Force has 35 aircraft in service, 25 of which are helicopters. In 2007, the United States offered the Dominican Air Force 3 Sikorsky S-61 helicopters as gifts; the air force rejected the offer, however, as it could not finance the necessary repairs. In the same year the Air Force announced that it would buy 10 Embraer EMB 314 attack aircraft from Brazil, which are now in service as trainers and coast patrol aircraft. Furthermore, additional radar and anti-air installations are planned to better protect the Dominican airspace.

The Navy has 17 ships in service, including 5 corvettes .

Assignments abroad

Dominican soldiers were also deployed on missions by Allied troops abroad (such as in Iraq ). The Dominican Republic withdrew from the Iraq mission after a short time (like other countries, e.g. Nicaragua , Honduras , Thailand and New Zealand ).
