history

In 1951, Franz Mrkvicka founded the women's basketball club Union Kuenring, which was taken over and continued by Prof. Ander 11 years later after the death of its founder. In the following three decades, Union Kuenring rose to become a successful basketball club in Austria. The men's section split off in 1975. Since the 2012/2013 season there has been a partnership with the Basket Clubs Vienna Juniors (previously a purely male club) to cover both genders.

The women - record champions

When today's AWBL - Austrian Women Basketball League was founded in 1963, the women of Union Kuenring were title contenders from the start. The championship title was achieved as early as 1966 and subsequently until 1969. This success was repeated for the 19 following seasons. From 1970 to 1986 Union Kuenring played with two teams in the Bundesliga. In 1988 the main sponsor dropped out and the club had to withdraw from the Bundesliga for a short time. In 1997 a very young women's team, built up from their own offspring, returned to the Bundesliga. As the only team that played without legionnaires, it immediately achieved fourth place. In 1999, in addition to the Bundesliga team, the Vienna Regional League was also strongly promoted, with several championship titles being won as a result.

The men's team

At the beginning there was also a successful men's team. In 1959/60 she won the first Viennese championship title. In 1965/66 the men even became Austrian champions. In 1975 the men's department separated from the club and founded its own club.
