Union for Democratic Rebirth

The Union for Democratic Rebirth (also rebirth , Georgian დემოკრატიული აღორძინების პავშირი , Demokratiuli Agordsinebis Pawschiri ) was a regionally oriented party in Georgia . It was founded in 1992 under the name Ajarian Union for the Rebirth of Georgia . In 1998 it got its current name. The chairman was the head of state Ajaras , Aslan Abashidze . The party disbanded on May 6, 2004 after the change of power in Adjara .

She campaigned for the protection of regional interests and called for regional self-government independent of the central government. Economic advancement was to be achieved in a market-based way, combined with social security as in the former Soviet Union . In terms of foreign policy, she advocated rapprochement with Russia .

In elections in Ajara, the Rebirth Party always received more than 95% of the vote. In the Supreme Council of Ajara it is the majority and the government. In the Georgian parliamentary elections in 1995 she got 7.03% of the vote and 31 seats. In 1999 an electoral alliance led by her with socialists and a unity received 25.18%. Of the 51 seats in the alliance, 15 seats were held by the Rebirth Party. In the Georgian Parliament , she mainly acted as the spokesman for the Ajarian government.

After the so-called Rose Revolution in Georgia in 2003, the party's popularity fell dramatically. The rebirth was the only opposition party to call for demonstrations for President Eduard Shevardnadze, who had come under pressure, in Tbilisi . Party leader Abashidze publicly assured him of his solidarity. In the Georgian parliamentary elections on March 28, 2004, the party slipped to 6.01% of the vote. In parliament she had six members who won direct seats. In the city ​​council of Tbilisi she occupied four of 49 seats.

The party published a daily newspaper to which all members had to subscribe and a news agency. Both carried the name Agordsineba .
