The United Internet for UNICEF foundation under civil law was founded in September 2006 by entrepreneur Ralph Dommermuth from the Westerwald region with a foundation capital of 300,000 euros. According to its own account, it aims to improve the living conditions of children and people in need by raising donations. For this purpose, the United Internet Group's marketing machine is used for doubling donations and the users of WEB.DE , GMX and 1 & 1 are asked to make donations at regular intervals. The foundation is based in the German headquarters of UNICEF in Cologne.

The foundation board and the advisory board work on a voluntary basis and are partly recruited from employees of the United Internet Group or UNICEF. The chair is Tessa "Tess" Page (née Ulrich), a long-time companion of Dommermuth. Page visited Unicef projects several times.

The foundation came into focus for a short time in 2008 in connection with the critical examination of the financial results of UNICEF Germany, but media suspicions against “United Internet for UNICEF” remained unproven. The DZI, which in December 2007 forbade the foundation to use the donation seal licensed to UNICEF for formal reasons, saw no critical clues after an examination by “United Internet for UNICEF”. “United Internet for UNICEF” established itself regardless of the criticism as a reliable and regular major donor for UNICEF. Just five years after it was founded, the mark of ten million euros in donations was reached. The foundation is one of the largest single donors to UNICEF and was awarded the newly created “Gustav Rau Prize” from UNICEF Germany in 2014. According to the company's own statements, the total volume of donations sent to UNICEF was over 40 million euros after 12 years. Since the foundation has not built up a cost structure itself, 100% of the donations go to UNICEF.
