The Army Research Laboratory ( ARL ) is the US Army's central research laboratory . ARL is headquartered in the Adelphi Laboratory Center (ALC) in Adelphi, Maryland . The largest single location is at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. Other important ARL locations are the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina , the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and Orlando , Florida, and the Glenn Research Center of NASA in Ohio and the Langley Research Center in Virginia.

In addition to the Office for Army Research, the ARL has six technical research directions:

  • Computer and Information Sciences
  • Human research and technology
  • Sensors and electronic devices
  • Survivability / Lethality Analysis
  • Vehicle technology
  • Weapons and materials research

The ARL's mission is to discover, innovate, and transform science and technology in order to secure a dominant strategic land power. Its vision is to be the nation's premier land forces laboratory.
