The Universidad del Cauca is a public university in the city of Popayán in Colombia .

history

It was founded in November 1827. From the beginning, the university supported the liberation by Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander . Several college decrees by Simón Bolívar were written within the University of Cauca.

The university has its roots in the educational institutions of the colonial times, where the generation of the later protagonists of the independence fighters against the Spanish empire such as Francisco José de Caldas , Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera and Camilo Torres was formed. The history of Colombia's independence and its beginnings as an independent republic also represents the history of the university.

In the 20th century , the university attracted students from different regions of the country, but mostly from the southwest of the country. Seventeen graduates from the University of Cauca have served in the Colombian government.

The historical university archive in the old town of Popayán has a collection of documents from the colonial era and independence, which is considered by historians and social scientists. It was founded in 1970, and José María Arboleda Llorente listed around 24,000 documents from 1928 until his death in 1969. This fund consists of files from the governor of Popayán, the independent Cauca state, the Departamento del Cauca and the judicial archive .
