The University of Kōchi ( Japanese 高 知 大学 , Kōchi daigaku ) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is in Kōchi in Kōchi Prefecture .
history
The (older) University of Kōchi was founded in 1949 through the merger of the three state schools. The three were:
- the high school Kōchi ( 高 知 高等学校 , Kōchi kōtō gakkō , founded 1922),
- the normal school Kōchi ( 高 知 師範学校 , Kōchi shihan gakkō , founded 1874), and
- the youth normal school Kōchi ( 高 知 青年 師範学校 , Kōchi his shihan gakkō , founded in 1923).
The Kōchi high school, the predecessor of the humanities and natural sciences faculty, was located on the Ozu campus in the city of Kōchi (today the seat of the affiliated elementary and middle schools of the Faculty of Education. 33 ° 33 ′ 55.7 ″ N , 133 ° 31 ′ 44.9 ″ O ). Their motto was the word of the first rector (1923), something like: “Youth, be enthusiastic! A life without enthusiasm is empty and hollow! ”(Japanese 感激 あ れ 若 人 よ 、 感激 な き 人生 は は 空虚 な り ). The high school served as a preparatory course for the imperial universities . Its campus was used by the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences until 1960.
The normal school Kōchi, the predecessor of the pedagogical faculty, was located in today's Asakura campus since 1947, in a former military base of the Imperial Japanese Army , because it lost the school buildings in the Pacific War . The university administration has been on the Asakura campus since 1964.
In 2003, the (older) Kōchi University and the Kōchi Medical University ( 高 知 医科大学 , Kōchi ika daigaku , founded in 1976) were merged to form the newer Kōchi University.
