The University of Kumamoto ( Japanese 熊 本 大学 , Kumamoto daigaku , short: Kumadai ( 熊 大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is located in Kurokami, Kumamoto in Kumamoto Prefecture .

history

The university has its origins in the Saishunkan Hospital founded in 1756 ( 再 再 館 , dt. "House of returning spring") and in the medicinal herb garden Banjien ( 蕃 滋 園 , dt. "Garden with multiplying and overgrown plants"). Its founder was Hosokawa Shigekata ( 細 川 重 賢 , 1721–1785), the daimyo of Kumamoto- Han . The Kumamoto-Han was abolished in 1871 and the hospital became a public hospital, which became the Kumamoto Private Medical School in 1896. In 1922 it developed into the Kumamoto Prefectural Medical School and then in 1929 into the Kumamoto State Medical School ( 熊 本 医科大学 , Kumamoto ika daigaku ).

In 1949 the university was founded by the merger of the six state schools in Kumamoto:

  • Kumamoto Medical College,
  • the Fifth High School ( 第五 高等学校 , Dai-go kōtō gakkō , founded in 1887),
  • the Kumamoto technical center ( 熊 本 工業 専 門 学校 , Kumamoto kōgyō semmon gakkō , founded in 1906),
  • the Kumamoto Pharmaceutical College ( 熊 本 薬 学 専 門 学校 , Kumamoto yakugaku semmon gakkō , founded in 1885),
  • the normal school Kumamoto ( 熊 本 師範学校 , Kumamoto shihan gakkō , founded 1874), and
  • the normal youth school Kumamoto ( 熊 本 青年 師範学校 , Kumamoto his shihan gakkō , founded in 1920).

The main campus (Kurokami Campus) is the former seat of the Fifth High School and the Kumamoto Technical Center. The schools were founded in May 1887 as the state Fifth Higher Middle School ( 第五 高等 中 学校 , Dai-go kōtō chūgakkō ) and served as a preparatory course for the Imperial University . Later the medical faculty (in Nagasaki in Aug. 1887) and the technical faculty (1897) were established. In 1894 the Fifth Higher Middle School was renamed the Fifth High School. In 1901 the medical faculty developed into the Nagasaki Medical School (now Nagasaki University ) and in 1906 the technical faculty developed into the Kumamoto Higher Technical School ( 熊 本 高等 工業 学校 , Kumamoto kōtō kōgyō gakkō ), which was renamed the Technikum Kumamoto in 1944. Lafcadio Hearn and Natsume Sōseki were teachers at the Fifth High School for several years. Today the university museum is located in the main building of the fifth high school (built in 1889). The main building of the technical center (built in 1924) is now the administration building of Kumamoto University.

The former Banjien Medicinal Herb Garden was closed in 1890 and the plants were donated to the Fifth High Middle School. So the university's medicinal herb garden has the daughters of the Banjien plants .
