Luigi Calabresi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luigi Calabresi (born November 14, 1937 in Rome , † May 17, 1972 in Milan ) was an Italian police superintendent who was assassinated in front of his house and died two shots from a revolver.

murder

The murder of Calabresi took place against the background of several bombings in Rome and Milan in 1969. During the investigation, the anarchist Giuseppe Pinelli was arrested, who later fell out of the window under unexplained circumstances and died in police custody. Giuseppe Pinelli was wrongly suspected. It later emerged that the terrorist attack had been carried out by the right wing. In the absence of evidence, the police officers were dismissed and the court found that Pinelli's fall was an accident.

Calabresi was accused in parts of the public of being responsible for the death of Pinelli. The leftist movement Lotta Continua was among those who blamed Calabresi for this.

The perpetrators and instigators of the murder of Calabresi were determined only after many years. Adriano Sofri and Giorgio Pietrostefani were identified as the instigators of the murder, and Ovidio Bompressi and Leonardo Marino as perpetrators and convicted.

Luigi Calabresi received the gold medal of the Italian Republic for civil valor.

Beatification process

At the initiative of the priest Ennio Innocenti, a beatification process was initiated for Luigi Calabrese . As the responsible diocesan bishop, Dionigi Cardinal Tettamanzi has been examining the submitted material since 2007. Pope Paul VI raised Luigi Calabresi to the venerable servant of God .
