The University of Shimane ( Jap. 島根大学 , daigaku Shimane , short Shimadai ( 島大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is located in Matsue in Shimane Prefecture .
history
The (older) Shimane University was founded in 1949 through the merger of the following state schools:
- the Matsue high school ( 松江 高等学校 , Matsue kōtō gakkō , founded in 1920),
- the Shimane Normal School ( 島 根 師範学校 , Shimane shihan gakkō , founded in 1875), and
- the youth normal school Shimane ( 島 根 青年 師範学校 , Shimane his shihan gakkō in Izumo , founded in 1933).
The university was opened with two faculties: the humanities and natural sciences faculty, and the pedagogical faculty. In 1965, the Shimane Prefectural Agricultural College ( 島 根 県 立 島 根 農科 大学 , Shimane-kenritsu Shimane nōka daigaku , founded in 1921) became the Faculty of Agriculture. In 2003 the (older) University of Shimane and the Medical University of Shimane ( 島 根 医科大学 , Shimane ika daigaku , founded in 1975) were merged to form the newer University of Shimane.
