history

The Vechta University Library

The university library in its present form has existed since 1947. At that time it was the library of the Pedagogical University, the predecessor institution of today's university. Since 1830 there has been teacher training in Vechta, which is why the library at that time had several thousand volumes from the prewar period that came from the respective previous institutions. From 1973 to 1994 the library was a branch of the University Library of the University of Osnabrück , as the Vechta University of Education was a branch of the University of Osnabrück at that time. Since the Vechta University of Applied Sciences (or Vechta University since 2010) became independent in 1995, the university library has been an independent institution.

Scientific focus

The (collective) focus of the library is essentially based on the teaching and research focus of the University of Vechta. Nevertheless, in the past, focal points have emerged that make up a not inconsiderable extent of the library's holdings. This includes regional literature, books for children and young people as well as collections from the Vechta-born writer Rolf Dieter Brinkmann .

Duration

The library has a total of 515,000 volumes. Of these, around 175,000 can be found in the reading area. In addition, a little more than 500 current (print) magazines are kept. 40,400 electronic journals and databases are also part of the library. A total of around 10,000 new acquisitions (volumes) are made every year. In addition to 238 workstations (52 of which are PC workstations), there are 13 additional individual working rooms available to readers.
