The University Bridge ( Polish Most Uniwersytecki ) in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz is a cable-stayed bridge over the Brda . The bridge with the two interpenetrating pylons is part of the 1.6 km long four-lane university city passage opened in 2013, which connects the northern parts of the city with those in the south. During the construction phase the bridge was called Lech-Kaczyński Bridge , Most im in Polish . Lecha Kaczyńskiego .

history

A better connection between the city districts was planned as early as the 1970s, but this failed due to insufficient funding. Implementation of the project was only possible with the help of the EU . Construction work began in autumn 2010 and cost 207 million zlotys for the entire road project , of which the EU paid 93 million. Originally the bridge in honor should Lech Kaczynski , the just before the start of construction at the plane crash near Smolensk perished Polish President , Lech Kaczynski-bridge are called; However, the building was given its current name by the Bydgoszcz City Council in November 2013 shortly before it was opened. The renaming met with resistance and was challenged in court, the police removed illegally attached signs with the old name.

Building

The bridge is 200.9 m long and is supported by the two 68.7 m high pylons on the south bank of the river, the shape of which is based on the letters Alpha and Omega of the Greek alphabet . The steel composite structure is carried by 16  plastic-coated ropes, the longest of which is 160 m long. The approach bridges are designed as concrete box girders supported by architecturally designed pillars. The bridge crosses two lanes in both directions, but has no cycle paths or sidewalks, which led to strong criticism from the population. For this reason, the local public transport buses that cross the bridge can be used free of charge.

The bridge is painted in green, beige, orange and red colors. At night, the bridge is illuminated with LEDs , the color of the lighting slowly changing from red to turquoise and green to purple.
