The Université de recherche Paris Sciences et Lettres - Université PSL for short  - is a French university as an amalgamation of some of the most prestigious universities - so-called Grandes Écoles - in the country. These include the Ecole Normale Supérieure , the École nationale supérieure des Mines de Paris , the Collège de France and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales . It is one of the outstanding university institutes in France.

History and goals

The PSL was founded in 2010 as Paris Sciences et Lettres - Quartier Latin (PSL-QL for short) by five Parisian elite universities and research centers. It was initially a research facility in the field of humanities and literature . The initiators of this collaboration were the École normal supérieure and the Collège de France . Primarily this cooperation took the form of joint research projects. The medium-term goal was to develop a research university from the participating institutions. Today, the university also includes other elite universities such as the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) or École des mines (ParisTech).

Excellence Initiative

Within the French university reform and the organization of research institutions, Paris Sciences et Lettres - Quartier Latin has launched an excellence initiative to bring 13 Parisian institutions together and form a unified research university.
