Unsplash is an international website for photos made available by their authors for the online community to use free of charge. Over 1200 web apps access the stock of images via its own programming interface (API) , which now also includes historical photos.

history

Unsplash was founded in May 2013 as a Tumblr blog with 10 pictures that were left over from a photo job for the website of Crew , the start-up company of the founders at the time, and were offered for download under the CC0 license. The response to this contributed significantly to the continued existence of the startup. Initially, the claim was “10 new high-resolution photos every 10 days ” and in September 2014 the 776 images were moved from Tumblr to a separate domain . A search function was introduced in January 2015 and in May of the same year - two years after it was founded - the number of photographers had grown to 8,000 and the number of downloads to 30 million. The first event cooperation with Apple Stores took place three months later and a programming interface (API) was presented. In 2016, Apple advertised images of Unsplash photographers and Unsplash became available on Apple TV .

In January 2017, Unsplash Inc. was founded and Crew was separated . In June 2017, the company switched from the CC0 license to its own Unsplash license. It is partly denied whether the pictures are still suitable for Open Educational Resources (free teaching materials). The reason given was to want to take the wind out of the sails of imitators .

In 2018 the app for iOS was presented and today's logo was introduced. In July 2019, the Unsplash for Education started a cooperation with the New York Public Library , which has since published historically significant photos under its Unsplash user account.

License

The images published before January 5, 2017 were brought into circulation under the CC0 license, but there is no indication of this in the individual photos. The license, which has been in effect since February 2018, allows extensive, including commercial use (e.g. in advertisements) without naming names, except for the mere resale without adding your own creative work or elements and the sale of products such as posters with such unaltered photos or objects (cups, clothes, etc.); It is also not permitted to build your own image database or a similar service from the downloaded images. The existence of a model contract is not checked, so the license does not include the use of photos of people; The same applies to the brand logos and works of art shown.
