Discontinuous regulator
Discontinuous controllers are controllers whose manipulated variable is generated according to discontinuous mathematical laws. In many cases these are also time-variant; that is, they change their behavior during runtime.
The most frequently used discontinuous controller is the two-position controller . The switching states can, for example, be "On" and "Off" as with the bimetal . The discontinuous controller is used, for example, on an iron , the temperature of which is specified. If the temperature falls below the setpoint , the bimetal switches on the heating . If the temperature exceeds the setpoint, the bimetal switches off the heating. A switching hysteresis prevents switching that is too frequent.
In addition to the two-position controller, there is also the three-position controller , which can then have the following three switching states, for example: cooling, off, heating.
In contrast, there are continuous controllers , which require a more complex electrical circuit, but can be flexibly adjusted. (see also Schmitt trigger )
