Upschört

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Upschört is a bog colony founded around 1800 north of Wiesede. The village is named after the so-called Upschört Moor to the north. Its name, in turn, is a combination of the Low German terms up (= up, up, up) and Schört (= cut, crack, opening, divorce, border, sloping, steep, sloping). The village name thus describes the location of the place on the border between sand and moor. With the construction of the Ems-Jade Canal in 1880/88, the development of row settlement took off. Many residents found work there. After the waterway was completed, a number of inland waterway operators also settled in Upschört. Today the village is part of the Friedeburg community together with Wiesede . The head of the village is Elke Hildebrandt.
