A urine bottle (commonly known as duck ) is a container used in hospitals , long-term care, and emergency services to collect a patient's urine .

properties

A urine bottle, also called urinals, is initially designed for the male member. There are anatomically adapted shapes for women. Urine bottles used to be made of glass and are now made of transparent or semi-transparent plastic. They have a scale so that the amount of content can be read off, some can be closed with a lid and attached to the nursing or hospital bed with a bracket . Urine bottles are cleaned and disinfected in bedpan washers .

Areas of application

In hospitals, the urine bottle is mostly used for bedridden patients who cannot go to the toilet on their own, for example because they are temporarily weakened by an operation . Urine bottles are kept in the rescue service's means of transport and used for incontinent patients or on longer journeys.

The urine bottle can also be used for longer journeys, camping or as an emergency utensil.

Use in men

Men, due to the anatomy of the genitals, are able to use urinary ducks in various positions and positions. This means that you can urinate while standing, lying or sitting almost without any problems.

Use in women

For women, however, the selection is smaller or adapted. Special funnels (attachments) for urine bottles, which in turn can be extended with a special hose, also allow you to use a urine bottle while standing, lying or sitting.

materials

Urine bottles are mainly made from three different materials: plastic , stainless steel and glass .

Depending on how often this tool is used, the choice of the right manufacturing material is crucial. Attention must be paid to the break resistance, the leakage security and the possibility of cleaning the urine bottle.

Plastic urine bottles

The vast majority of all urinary ducks are made of plastic. On the one hand, because the manufacturing costs are particularly low. On the other hand, they are more robust than those made of glass. Another disadvantage is that transparent bottles in particular can quickly turn yellow. Many manufacturers therefore offer opaque, colored urine bottles.

Stainless steel urine bottles

Products made of stainless steel are comparable to urinals made of plastic in terms of robustness and resistance. The big disadvantage of this design is that stainless steel versions usually have a slightly roughened surface, which encourages the retention of urine residues.

In addition, stainless steel is a rather cool material, which users, both men and women, can find uncomfortable.

Glass urine bottles

Urinary ducks made of glass are particularly easy to care for, but they are also relatively heavy. Depending on the size, a used urine bottle can weigh several hundred grams. Compared to the other two materials, glass is particularly sensitive to shocks and falls. Furthermore, these executions are usually the most expensive.

cleaning

The cleaning of the urine bottle can in principle be carried out effectively in a few steps. If the urine bottle is used several times a day, simply rinsing it out with warm water every day is sufficient. At periodic intervals, however, the urinals should be thoroughly cleaned with appropriate brushes, cleaning agents and skin-friendly disinfectants. Appropriate odor-neutralizing cleaners are also suitable for stubborn odors.
