Ibrahim al-Yazigi

Ibrahim al-Yazigi ( Arabic ابراهيم اليازجي, DMG Ibrāhīm al-Yāziǧī ; * 1847 ; † 1906 ) was a Lebanese philologist , poet and journalist . He belonged to the Christian Catholic community in Lebanon.

Life

His family is originally from Homs in Syria and immigrated to Lebanon before he was born. His father was the poet and philologist Nasif al-Yazigi (1800–1871). Ibrahim al-Yazigi was editor-in-chief of several newspapers and magazines, including an-Naǧāh , aṭ-Ṭabīb and aḍ-Ḍiyāʾ .

He was commissioned by the Jesuits to translate the Bible into Arabic . It was the second translation of the Bible into modern Arabic. The first translation was commissioned by the Protestant missionaries under the leadership of the missionary Kornelius Van Dyke , founder of the American University of Beirut , to two Christian-Lebanese writers and philologists, Buṭrus al-Bustānī and Nāṣīf al-Yāziǧī . Their translation of the Bible appeared in 1856. The translation of al-Yāziǧī was published between 1876 and 1880 and was linguistically richer than the first Protestant translation.
