UserGate is a product line from the Russian software developer Entensys , which is intended to ensure security when using Internet access and e-mail in small and medium-sized companies, schools and authorities. Since 2003 the manufacturer has been developing the Proxy & Firewall, the program that initially only acted as a proxy server, and has expanded it with new functions with each version. In 2010 the mail server was launched. In 2013, the Web Filter was added to the product line now comprising three products.
General
The product line is entirely proprietary software . The products are mainly operated on servers. Depending on the program, the server's operating system plays a role. The manufacturer also attaches great importance to simple operation and self-explanatory user guidance in the program and configuration.
Product range
UserGate Proxy & Firewall
This program is a gateway solution that supports the functions of a proxy server , a firewall and an Internet filter. The product is used in more than 25,000 companies worldwide. Version 4.3 was presented on the German market in 2008. Shortly afterwards, version 5.0 appeared on the market with support for URL filtering. The product can be used to control access by users to the Internet and from the Internet to the local network via a VPN tunnel.
UserGate Web Filter
In 2013 the UserGate Web Filter was released, a product that provides gateway internet filtering for schools and businesses. It supports five filter methods - based on categories, morphological analysis of text content on websites, secure search, filtering using black and white lists and suppressing advertising and pop-ups. The Web Filter is also available as a pure cloud solution that does not require any additional hardware. With this solution, however, the scope of the filter options is limited.
UserGate Mail Server
This is a mail server solution with a built-in anti-spam filter and an integrated web interface for remote access.
Licensing
Depending on the product, licensing is tied to a size that can be used to measure the extent of use. In the case of proxy & firewall and web filter, so-called “connections” are licensed, ie connections for which a connection is required. With the mail server, the size is differentiated according to "mailboxes", ie the number of internal e-mail addresses. There are licenses for 12 months or for an unlimited period. Subscribed modules each have a license that is valid for 12 months. The manufacturer provides a test version for each product, which guarantees a functionality of 30 days.
