Uwagi

The scheme of an Uwagi.

Uwagi ( Japanese 上衣 or 上 着 ) denotes the "jacket" in Japanese martial arts (Japanese Budō ). The uwagi is part of the training suit (Japanese keikogi ) of the martial artist and can vary greatly in appearance.

use

A Budōka with a club emblem and advertising on his Uwagi.

Uwagi are dressed like a shirt and always worn with the left over the right side. If someone is buried in his uwagi in the event of death, the right side is placed over the left side. A belt (Japanese obi ) is used to keep the jacket from opening. To attach the two side parts, some models use a lacing at waist level (e.g. in Jiu Jitsu , Karate ) or in the chest area (e.g. in Iaidō ).

Often club or association emblems (so-called badges ) can be seen on the Uwagi . These then represent the Budōka's affiliation to a martial art, an association and / or a club. Often, advertising stickers from the manufacturing companies are embroidered on the Uwagi as self-promotion.

material

The Uwagi is usually made of cotton and their thickness or strength varies greatly - from eight to 16 ounces (oz). The strength and weaving pattern depend on the requirements of the martial art and also the preference of the individual Budōka.

colour

The color of the Uwagi - traditionally white - depends on the martial art itself or is determined by the martial arts association or club. Common colors are white, black, and blue.
