Uwini

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Uwini († August 1896 ) was a chief priest of the Makalaka in Zimbabwe . During the Matabele uprising in 1896, he played a decisive role together with six other Matabele priest chiefs . He was executed 150 km north of Bulawayo in August 1896. He was considered immortal among the Matabele, Makalakas and Maholis because of his deity M'limo and refused to capitulate after his capture by the British, i.e. to call on his followers to lay down their arms. He was then accused of participating in the murder of white settlers, sentenced to death by a court martial (the British South Africa Company ) and shot in public.
