Sakai is an open source learning room system that is supported by an extensive community and is an alternative to various commercial learning room systems. The software is Java- based and was developed with the aim of being able to withstand comparison with commercial systems in all aspects.

The project was started in 2004 and has its origins in open source projects at the University of Michigan and Indiana University . MIT and Stanford University later joined these developers . In addition to this team, who implemented the system's framework and core tools, there are Currently about 80 other universities around the world that participate in the Sakai Educational Partners Program (SEPP).

At Sakai, two components can be distinguished on a technical level: The Sakai framework and the Sakai tools. While the Sakai framework provides the basic functions of the learning room system, additional functions can be implemented and integrated using Sakai tools. Classic tools are, for example, a discussion board, a gradebook or a tool for electronic exams "Sakai Test & Quizzes". Thanks to the open interfaces, every user is able to implement their own tools for individual requirements. There can be several solutions for one application, as is the case with the discussion board, for example.

At the university level, an extensive community has formed in recent years, which, guided by its own needs and experience, contributes different parts to the overall system. At regular conferences there is a lively exchange between the participants. In addition to a large number of American conferences, there is the European Sakai Day in Lübeck .
